Missing transcription troubleshooting steps

If you chose a new language in the app for the first time, the language model must be downloaded in order to work offline. Sometimes the existing language must be redownloaded for offline dictation and speech recognition by iOS. Make sure you have an internet connection and enough free space (Settings>iPhone/iPad Storage) and follow the next steps:

 

coldRead needs offline dictation. To test if offline dictation works across the device - turn the Airplane Mode On and try to dictate in Notes or Messages. If the microphone is greyed out or missing, languages for offline recognition are missing across iOS.

 

Make sure dictation is enabled

 

1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.

2. Scroll to the bottom and tap the switch for Enable Dictation.

3. Confirm you want to Enable Dictation.

4. Now restart your device.

 

If Dictation was already enabled, turn it off and restart your device. Then follow the steps above to turn it on again.

 

Remove and re-add your Apple keyboards

 

1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.
2. Tap the Keyboards button.
3. Choose to Add New Keyboard… and add any alternative keyboard. Choose a third-party keyboard or a different language, like English (United Kingdom).
4.  In the top right, tap Edit and remove your original Apple keyboard.
5.  Also remove the Emoji keyboard if you have it.
6.  Restart your device.
7.  Return to step one above, but add your original keyboard and remove the new one.

 

Turn off Screen Time restrictions for Siri & Dictation

 

1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

2. Enter your Screen Time passcode if you have one.

3. Tap Allowed Apps and make sure Siri & Dictation is turned on.

4. Alternatively, choose to turn off all Content & Privacy Restrictions from the previous screen.

 

Remove or stop using third-party keyboards

 

Third-party keyboards might not offer Dictation like the Apple keyboard does. Switch back to the standard keyboard whenever you want to use Dictation. Or remove your third-party keyboards altogether.

 

Turn off Siri and Dictation at the same time, then turn them back on

 

1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.

2. Scroll to the bottom and turn off the toggle for Enable Dictation.

3. Confirm you want to Turn Off Dictation.

4. Now go to Settings > Siri & Search.

5. Turn off Listen for “Hey Siri”.

6. Turn off Press Home for Siri.

7. Confirm you want to Turn Off Siri.

8. Restart your device then return to the settings above to turn on Siri, "Hey Siri", Press Home For Siri, and Dictation.
